IPD + EDI Design Challenge 2014

How might we make on-the-go, healthy eating easy and enjoyable for busy nurses?

Fall 2014

During the IPD + EDI 2014 Design Challenge, we were challenged to promote healthy eating in the cafeteria at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). We had 24 hours to conduct primary research, uncover needs and identify opportunity areas, and ultimately prototype and present our design solutions.

Our team was focused on understanding the needs of busy nurses at the hospital. While intercepting real nurses in the HUP cafeteria, we learned that they often have five minutes or less to purchase a meal or snack. They often grabbed the food items that looked the tastiest and the easiest to eat on the go: pizza, chips, cookies, etc.

Skills:

  • Design research

  • In-context intercept interviews

  • Synthesis: defining problems; identifying themes and opportunity areas

  • Rapid prototyping

We wanted to make eating healthy easier and simpler for these nurses, so we designed the Fuel Pack system. Three pre-designed, healthy meal choices will be prominently displayed in the entrance to the cafeteria. Nurses can grab a ticket for the meal of their choice and take it directly to the checkout line, where they pay and pick up their meal. The Fuel Pack meal box is designed to allow for one-handed carrying and easy eating.

The IPD + EDI 2014 Design Challenge was in collaboration with the Penn Medicine Center for Healthcare Innovation.
