IPD + EDI Design Challenge 2013
HOW MIGHT WE MAKE FAMILY-CENTERED ROUNDS MORE INCLUSIVE FOR PRETEEN PATIENTS AT NORTHSHORE HOSPITAL?
FALL 2013
During the IPD + EDI 2013 Design Challenge, we were challenged to help redesign family-centered rounds for young patients (ages 3-18) at NorthShore Hospital, with the goal of making the process more inclusive and comforting for both the patients and their families. We had 24 hours to conduct primary research, uncover needs and identify opportunity areas, and ultimately prototype and present our design solutions.
Our team was focused on understanding the needs of preteen patients with chronic illnesses, who are therefore frequent visitors to the hospital. Through "speed-dating" style interviews with doctors, nurses, and teens, we learned that while these patients are experts in their own conditions, they often don't feel comfortable asking questions or speaking up during the intimidating rounds process.
SKILLS:
Ethnographic research
ynthesis: defining problems; identifying themes and opportunity areas
- Rapid prototyping
We wanted to give these young patients an approachable and fun tool for engaging with doctors and nurses throughout their stay, so we designed Canvas. Canvas is a sketchpad designed specifically for use on bedside tables, and gives patients a designated space to ask questions, share thoughts, or act as a creative outlet for sketching or writing.
